Description
“We are everywhere and we are here to stay.” The theme of resisting oppression was at the forefront in the late 1970s, as those words were heard in San Diego during what was then called the Lesbian/Gay Men Pride Parade and Rally.
During 1977, the battle for gay rights was largely centered in Florida when Anita Bryant led a fight to roll back protections for gays in Miami-Dade County. And in 1978, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, was assassinated.
In 1978, many in the San Diego community said they wouldn’t march because they thought the parade was turning into a political issue rather than a showing of “gay solidarity.” In the end, hundreds showed up.
