Appointment of Dr. Herbert Marcuse as Professor of Philosophy
November 6, 1964
Dr. Herbert Marcuse, Professor of Politics and Philosophy at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts,
has accepted an appointment as Professor of Philosophy on the San Diego campus of the University of California,
it has been announced by University President Clark Kerr and San Diego Chancellor Herbert York.
Dr. Marcuse's appointment is effective as of July 1, 1965. He has served on the faculty of Brandeis since 1954.
During the past year he has also served as a Visiting Professor in the Graduate School at Yale University.
Dr. Marcuse has achieved an international reputation both among philosophers and laymen for his work on
modern social theory. His books deal with the development of Marxism, Freudianism, and modern contemporary
thought and have been reviewed by numerous magazines including Time and The Saturday Review of Literature.
His most recent work "One-Dimensional Man," published last year, contains an analysis of the dangerous
influences which developments in modern science have exerted on society.
Among his other works are: "Reason and Revolution," 1941; "Eros and Civilization , 1955; and "Soviet
Marxism," 1958.
Dr. Marcuse, born in Berlin, received his Ph.D. magna cum laude in Philosophy from the University of Freiburg,
Germany, in 1922. He did postgraduate research work in philosophy at the University from 1928 to 1932 and
served as a Research Fellow at the Institut de Recherches Sociales in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1933-34.
He served as a lecturer at Columbia University from 1936 to 1939, as a lecturer at Harvard University during
1952-53, and as a lecturer in philosophy and sociology at the University of Paris in 1958 and again in 1960-61.
He has been a Fellow at the Institute of Social Research at Columbia University, the Russian Institute at
Columbia, and the Russian Research Center at Harvard University.
During the war, Dr. Marcuse served as a Senior Analyst in the Office of War Information and from 1946 to
1950 as Senior Analyst and Chief of the Central European Section Office of Intelligence Research, United States
Department of State.
