Description
More 750 firefighters from around San Diego were part of a massive wildfire training exercise. This training has been going on for two decades and each year it's in a new location. This year it was in Chula Vista.
This three-day training exercise, which started 21 years ago, brings together firefighters from around San Diego and Imperial Counties, as well as fire crews from Mexico.
During the training, they incorporated many scenarios. They evaluated homes and defensible space and there's a model type mock fire that shows the spread of fire and how to attack. Part of the training also included deploying a Black Hawk helicopter to drop water at the former Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista.
Firefighters says while the basics concepts remain the same, such as hose deployment, there are new technology such like drones, satellites and ariel support, which has upped their game in attacking a wildfire.
Firefighters had this reminder for defensible space – if you live in the city or rural areas clear out any dry brush within 100 feet of your home and create as much defensible space in and around your home as possible.
