Description
090266 SOUTH PACIFIC
CBS 8 viewer Marissa Minnick wrote us asking if we might have film of this production. She thought it was a long shot, but in fact, we covered theater extensively in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Marissa: My grandpa, Michael Gubitosi, can be seen at the 20 second mark, he is the short sailor who comically “punches” and “shoves” the taller sailor. He always wanted to be an actor, but his life took him in a different direction. He attended the Naval Academy, spent time on a submarine in the Navy, and ended back up in San Diego where he met and married my grandma. Luckily he had the opportunity to be in this production of South Pacific to fulfill his acting passions.
And she wrote this to me:
Hi Barbara,
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. My grandfather is in the footage, and fortunately I got to watch the clip with my mom (his daughter). It made her so happy it brought her to tears. My grandpa passed away about a decade ago, so to be able to see something new of his, even briefly, is such a gift.
Thank you for everything!!!
Marissa
And her mother Marie wrote this:
Also, my mom was really excited. She said it was “such a sweet memory.” She shared the info with several friends in her assisted living even before I had given her the link to share with others. I also have some memory of seeing it (even though I was only 4 1/2) and thinking my dad was really funny."
Thank you so much!

I love being able to share our archive with the people in them.
Original script:
South Pacific opened last night at the Starlight Opera in Balboa Park. The musical includes a number of great songs and roles, including Bloody Mary… in real life Grace Carlisle.
She was just one of a host of co-stars who held a successful opening night.
This is Les Cozens playing the part of Emile de Becque, an island planter, who carries on a love affair that was nurtured on the theme of Some Enchanted Evening.
The object of his affections, Pat Zambrano, the happy-go-lucky dame from Little Rock, Arkansas, known as Nellie Forbush.
South Pacific fills the Starlight bill through September 11.
