Description
The long-awaited sand replenishment project at Solana Beach is wrapping up.
"It looks like they're working hard to rebuild this beach which is great," said Rhonda, a beachgoer.
Storms and coastal erosion had pulled away the sand and narrowed the coastline. Residents say this project, that was more than 20 years in the making, is a dramatic improvement.
"Lifeguards, emergency things, you can't let the land erode all the way up so they began this engineering project it's pretty complex. It's good to see the initiative to preserve this," said George Whitfield.
It took a lot of sand to make this possible. The interim city manager, Dan King, says 700,000 cubic yards of sand was placed along a 7,000 foot stretch of Solana Beach. The sand was sourced from an area offshore of the San Dieguito River.
