Description
A migrant center in San Diego County could close this week due to a lack of funding.
San Diego County has allocated a total of $6 million to the Migrant Welcome Center since October, and SBCS says the facility could close.
SBCS CEO Kathie Lembo said resources have been stretched thin, and staff plan to continue to work with the county in hopes of finding additional resources to keep it from potentially closing Feb. 22.
The facility has helped thousands of migrants get in touch with families and sponsors in the U.S. It offers interpreters and other organizations that provide legal services. Staff also help migrants reconnect with family if they get separated while traveling.
Local leaders already worry of a surge in migrants being left stranded at airports and on streets if the shelter closes this week.
