Description
May 14, 1954 Channel 8 is celebrating its fifth anniversary this week and had a special treat for viewers. A telecast was conducted this morning from the Skyroom of the El Cortez Hotel, where a Zoomar lens equipped camera scanned metropolitan San Diego and the waterfront. Attending the breakfast program was B.F. Coggan, Convair general manager, Dr. Charles Schroeder, director of the San Diego Zoo, and many other well-known personalities. One of the highlights of the Panorama Pacific program was the arrival of Pat Thienes, the city’s Walking Man. Thienes hiked to San Diego from Los Angeles in 23 hours, 45 minutes. Bonita Granville Wrather greets him as he steps off the elevator. Here’s George Wolfe, Lefty O’Doul, Jack Wrather, one of channel 8’s owners, and general manager George Whitney. With the celebration of its fifth birthday, channel 8 unveiled its new high-powered antenna located atop Mt. Soledad. The steel tower supporting the four ton antennae stands 84 feet high. It doubled the transmitting power of the old one, assuring viewers a brighter, clearer picture.
