Description
A local woodworker is continuing to honor the late Rosalynn Carter.
Russ Filbeck and his wife, Carol, have shared the art of carpentry with the Carter's for nearly two decades.
Filbeck has spent years making beautiful pieces with President Jimmy Carter and the late First lady Rosalynn Carter. Now he's carving out a piece of history at the Escondido Wood: A furniture Show.
“These shaker boxes Rosalynn made in my shop several years ago,” said Filbeck.
As he glided his hand over the smooth shaker box signed by Rosalynn, Filbeck stared at the tacks remembering when she made them in his woodshop years ago.
Roselyn was hammering in those tiny little tacks, she said, ‘you know, I helped build houses. I can drive a nail, she said, but these little tacks are hard,” said Filbeck.
The US Navy veteran met the Carter's long after politics. In 2004, Filbeck asked the former president to write a forward in his book, Making Ladder Chair Backs with Russ Filbeck, since then they've spent hours in his garage chipping away at chairs and shaker boxes.
