As we close out Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Rarely does a month go by that we don't see a social media post or celebrity speaking out about their fertility journey or miscarriage. Comedian Heather McMahan's new comedy special is the latest example of that.
Yet, even with those conversations starting to take place, it's still a taboo topic with a ton of misconceptions around infertility and miscarriage. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss. But in a US survey, more than half of those asked believe it happens to less than 5% of all pregnancies.
Now, Abbe Feder is on a mission to clear up misconceptions and create an open space for dialogue around pregnancy loss through her award-winning podcast Maculate Conception and as the founder of In Circle Fertility.
Abbe's personal story involves multiple egg retrievals, eight rounds of IVF, and two heart-wrenching miscarriages before finally welcoming their twins at the age of 40.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine just redefined infertility, expanding it to include not only a disease but also a status or a situation where couples have tried for 6-12 months with no success. This broader definition is a game-changer, making fertility support more inclusive, regardless of relationship status, sexual orientation and for those with a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, like Abbe.
