An increase in the admission price to the Children’s Zoo today hasn’t dented its popularity, judging from the weekend crowds. The raise from 15 to 25 cents was voted this past week by the City Council because the Children’s Zoo was funning in the red. The new rate has no effect on youngsters under 12 years old—they still get in for 15 cents. Officials say that of the more than 2-million yearly visitors to the zoo, about one million go to the children’s area where youngsters can pet and play with the animals. One of the favorites seems to be Alvila, the 2-month-old baby gorilla. She was the first lowland gorilla born at the San Diego Zoo and only the seventh at a zoo anywhere in the world.
