Newsmen got a look at the latest in “flying saucers” at the Naval Electronics Lab on Point Loma. Only this saucer will sail through the sea. It’s a mockup of the Deepstar being developed by Westinghouse. And the Navy is negotiating for its use in deep-sea research at a cost of more than one million dollars. The Navy says if the Deepstar comes to San Diego it could be followed by a multi-million dollar Westinghouse project to explore even deeper depths than the four thousand feet the Deepstar will dive. The saucer is said to be much more maneuverable than the bathyscaph Trieste which holds the deep dive record.
