September 16, 1968
Mayor Frank Curran presented an official proclamation declaring next week Cabrillo Festival Week. Co chairman Mary Giglitto accompanied by festival queen Linnette Rosa in an authentic Portuguese costume, accepted the official proclamation from the mayor. The week will begin with a flag raising ceremony in front of the County Administration building at nine o’clock Monday morning and will climax at 1:30 Sunday the 29th on Shelter Island with a re-enactment of the historic landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The mayor today also accepted a gift from Arthur J. Jessop, a white china plate—reproduced in Germany—bearing sketches of San Diego’s historical landmarks—a memento of San Diego’s 200th anniversary.
September 28, 1968
Commemorative ceremonies in conjunction with the Cabrillo Festival were held today at the National Monument on Point Loma. Supervisor Robert Dent expressed greetings from the county while in San Diego. Mayor Frank Curran was present to represent the city. The Director of the National Park Service George Hartzog Junior was the featured speaker and he expressed deep appreciation for the support and cooperation received from San Diegans in developing and administering Cabrillo National Monument. Hartzog said the voyage of Cabrillo contained all the elements which characterize the American experience.

The annual re-enactment of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s discovery of the city of San Diego was once again staged in this city today. Cabrillo claimed this territory for Spain 426 years ago. Today’s event included a number of traditional Portuguese dances performed by an entertainment troupe.
