Description
July 4, 1956
George Cleveland, everybody’s favorite Gramps of Channel 8’s CBS show Lassie, arrived at Lindbergh Field today with the world-famous dog. And the kids were right there waiting to pet her. Then down to the waterfront where Lassie boarded a Navy gig for the trip to Coronado. Most folks are accustomed to seeing Lassie on Channel 8 Sunday nights at 6:30 but to see her sitting near the prow of a navy boat on San Diego Bay was a real treat for young and old alike.

The world-famous dog Lassie came to ride in the Coronado parade, and while she was here, we asked Gramps (George Cleveland) if she could do any tricks. Well, Lassie was busy eating, so our cameraman stood by. Lassie is quite the lady…very good table manners…hmm, just what she ordered. Her trainer, Charles Weatherwax came along with her and afterward showed what she could do. The Life magazine photographer took advantage of the outing to get a few shots.

Television star Lassie has been made an honorary member of the staff at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Lassie, accompanied by Bonita Granville Wrather, associate producer of the Lassie TV series, received her certificate of honorary membership from Scripps director Dr. William Nierenberg. Lassie has been on location at Scripps filming a TV episode called “A New Horizon.”
Nicki Pierce chats with Wrather about Lassie. She said Lassie was always portrayed by a male dog.
(The film we digitized only has the interview, so we’ll take a look again and see if we can find Lassie.)
