About Girl Scouts San Diego (GSSD)
- GSSD serves more than 15,000 Girl Scouts in San Diego and Imperial counties; nearly 24,500 total girl and adult members.
- GSSD has approximately 1,400 troops in this region
- 40% of our girl members live in low-income households. Girl Scouts is available to all of them, regardless of ability to pay. Donor support makes this possible.
- Girl Scouts aims to be a solution to the issue of youth mental health challenges. Through partnerships with trusted adults—staff, volunteers, camp counselors—Girl Scouts San Diego creates a safe space for Girl Scouts to build connections, grow confidence, discover new adventures, and create hope for their futures.
Girl Scouts San Diego Outdoor Programs:
- Girl Scouts San Diego welcomed more than 1,870 summer campers in 2023 to four of our properties in San Diego County – Day Camps at Balboa Campus (13 acres) and Escondido Program Center (2.5 acres), and Sleepaway Camps at Camps Whispering Oaks and Winacka (632 acres).
- The volunteer led GSSD Hiking and Backpacking program went into the wild on a few adventures in the John Muir Wilderness, Sierra High Sequoia, and Golden Trout Wilderness. Skilled Girl Scouts built itineraries and demonstrated superior leadership, compassion, and good sense in the wild.
- This year's memorable camp and outdoor sessions were made possible thanks to 135 seasonal staff, volunteers, and more than 160 older Girl Scouts who participated in leadership development programs at camps.
- The leadership progression of Girl Scouts is clear in camp programming. Campers discover new interests as they progress through the various levels, each step providing new opportunities.
Girl Scouts in grades 7-12 can attend camp as Day Camp Aides (DCAs) or Counselors-In-Training (CITs). In partnership with adult staff, these teen mentors help lead activities and guide and support younger campers.
- Girl Scout programs like camp and the cookie program offer girls the chance to set goals and dive into new experiences.
- Thanks to generous donations, GSSD can provide financial assistance to campers in need (one camp session per camper per year), subsidize camp fees, and provide high-quality programs at top-notch facilities. Financial assistance is awarded as a percentage of camp fees, based on financial need.
