Description
April 27, 1982 Before Sluggo's arrived on the scene in 1981, authentic Vienna beef hot dogs were not on the menu in San Diego. The first restaurant was on Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach--and shortly after, a second location opened in La Jolla on La Jolla Blvd. The Chicago style hot dogs were amazing. Burgers and Italian beef were popular too.
Owner William Rohde's son Greg reached out to CBS 8 to see if we have Sluggo's stories in our archive. Indeed we do, and were happy to resurrect.
From Greg:
Growing up Sluggo
William Rohde and Marian Rohde opened Sluggos Chicago Style Hot Dogs Pacific Beach and La Jolla between 1980-1985. For their family it could have not come at a better time!
For their three sons and daughter it made for a childhood few get to experience! For the simple reason our father Bill Rohde AKA “ Sluggo” could not be happier doing what he loved to do making people happy, Bringing wonderful food to San Diego and helping in revitalizing a community at the same time. It seemed at least to me San Diego was amazing, it could not have been more wonderful of a time. We all were young, and didn’t really have a worry in the world, very fortunate.
Thank you San Diego! You really wrapped your arms around us!
