Description
The Division of Extended Studies at UC San Diego (DES) is steadfastly committed to cultivating and celebrating creativity and imagination of young learners across the globe. As summer comes to a close, and youth camps wrap up, I am excited to present Haute STEAM X, an innovative, credit-bearing program for local secondary students, delivered in partnership by Fashion Week San Diego and the Department of Education and Community Outreach at DES.
Offered at the state-of-the-art downtown campus UC San Diego Park & Market, Haute STEAM X invited aspiring fashion designers aged 15 to 17 to engage regional fashion professionals in conversations about climate-conscious and entrepreneurial approaches to design and assembly, 'slow' fashion and upcycling, economic and environmental impacts of high-volume production, and the need to raise awareness across the industry.
With guidance from practicing designers and Gwendolyn Bates, CEO of Fashion Week San Diego, participants in the five-hour workshop also had the opportunity to put principles into action, using reclaimed materials to fashion a wide array of new clothing. For some in attendance, Haute STEAM X served as a practical introduction to the sewing machine--an inspired moment forever stitched into the collective memory. For others, deep dives into the science of fashion proved to be eye-opening and a basis for a renewed commitment to conservation.
We would very much appreciate your consideration in honoring the achievements of the next wave of eco-friendly designers, already well on the way to making the world more sustainable, environmentally appreciative, and aesthetically compelling.
