Description
Orbit has been nominated for saving his human's life after her heroic service to our country. Lorilei served as an Army translator/voice-interceptor. While deployed during Operation Desert Shield and Storm Lorilei was exposed to sarin nerve gas.
Lorilei's nervous system is damaged, has over thirty lesions in her brain and spinal cord.
Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines matched Orbit and Lorilei in 2018. Orbit provides assistive tasks to mitigate PTSD symptoms and calm Lorilei's injured nervous system. If Lorilei is exposed to too much stimuli, her nervous system becomes overwhelmed. This can result in Lorilei becoming disoriented, slurring her speech (or not being able to speak), muscle weakness, vertigo, and cognitive impairment.
On average, a veteran dies by suicide every hour of every day. Lorilei was constantly planning her permanent departure. She was in a deep well of mental and physical anguish. In short, Orbit saved Lorilei's life. Orbit has healed MANY lives, actually. He was trained by inmates at RJD in San Diego who are profoundly changed by the experience. He brought smiles to volunteers on weekends during his two years in training.
Over time, Lorilei started coming back to life. Lorilei's mood and symptoms improved, and she started feeling a pull to share the joy and healing energy of this amazing service dog. Lorilei started visiting local fire departments to offer emotional support to the staff. We visit assisted living care facilities, libraries, and local businesses to share love and smiles.
Everyone who crosses paths with Orbit has a better day because of him. He’s a true hero.
