Description
July 4, 1967
The boys and girls in the 6200 block of Henderson Drive in La Mesa held their sixth annual Fourth of July celebration today and as usual it was a big success. The children deck themselves out in red, white and blue costumes, decorate their bikes and wagons and then traverse the block, from one end of the street to the other, and then back again. Aside from their own personal patriotic reasons, there may be an extra added incentive for the children, because the parade ends at the William Stovall residence, at 6260 Henderson, and everyone is treated to free hot dogs, potato chips, and punch. Stovall says it seems that every year the number of youngsters increases—along with their appetites.
Update: Joy Stovall says the girl at the end of the clip eating a hot dog wearing a blue hat is Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina astronaut. We interviewed Ellen when she graduated from SDSU in 1980--you just never know what we'll uncover in these vintage vids! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aOZaQiR1L8
