Description
Kelli Gillespie and Mei Ling Nazar joined the show to talk about how to save on a trip to Hawaii.
1. WHALE WATCHING SEASON
10,000 humpback whales migrate from Alaska and the North Pacific putting on a magical show on the shores of Hawaii. This can be seen from the sand, your hotel room, or a boat tour. In Ka'anapali locals call it "whale soup" witnessing whales playing and spurting along 3-miles of stunning beach!
SAVE: Watch whale activity for FREE! You can literally see from the beach, or most hotel rooms ocean-facing on Kaa'anapli beach.. we even saw whales on our drive from the airport! Many of the hotels offer "Whale Tales" where you can learn about the whales and conservation
SPLURGE: Take a catamaran or boat excursion to get up close, this was a must for us as you can see in the BROLL we saw multiple whales breach/jump and tons of tails and fin fun.
2. CULTURAL CONNECTION: ISLAND LIFE
Some many free or inexpensive ways to immerse yourself in Hawaiian cultural experiences. Traditions that are found no where else in the world and some of the unique activities are fire knife demonstration, lei making workshops, coconut weaving class and more!
SAVE: Most of the workshops and demonstrations are complimentary at the hotels or even at Whaler's Village if you're not staying in the area
SPLURGE: Level up with a Luau experience. Fire dancing, hula and a full show with all your favorite island foods and Hawaiian cocktails.
3. OUT OF THIS WORLD STARGAZING
With crystal-clear skies and located just 20 degrees north of the equator, Maui is the perfect place for astronomy. Exceptional views of 80 of the 88 constellations can be seen on the rooftop of the Hyatt Regency, which CNN Travel named the Top Stargazing Spot in the World... and you can even hang with a NASA Solar System Ambassador and check out different stars, planets, and even galaxies.
SAVE: Maui evenings provide a beautiful stargazing backdrop that you can see with the plain eye
SPLURGE: Not much of a splurge at less than $30 per adult (and you don't have be staying at the hotel to experience) you can do Tour of the Stars with the NASA expert and Great White HD telescope.
4. VACATION VIBES
Spring Break or Easter Vacation are perfect times to travel to Maui... from enjoying the beach and all the ocean activities like snorkling and sailing to pools, golf, ziplining, and of course dining on all the locally caught fish and fresh fruit... it's no wonder Hawaii is a top destination for Sacramento families to vacation.
SAVE: You made it to Maui, spend time on Ka'anapali Beach, touted one of the best in the world. Body surf or bring your own snorkel gear to catch a glimpse of turtles, coral and other sea life.
SPLURGE: Treat yourself to oceanfront dining and fish caught from the local fisherman, and maybe pick up a new outfit or fun souveniors to bring home from the shops at Whaler's Village (hope you love your Aloha Bag of goodies and lei)
