Description
1965!!
A look back at San Diego in August and September 1965 including the Mrs. America Pageant, Big Teenage Fair, Pacific Skateboarding Marathon and plenty of fashion shows. A new campground, SeaWorld and the zoo bustling with activity, a Poway parade, Aztecs football, and baseball legend Ted Williams in town--there's been a lot going on lately. Marcella Lee teleports back to 1965 to anchor this blast from the past newscast.
Hello, Dolly! opened its smash run at the Civic Theatre on September 7, 1965. All performances were sold out from Tuesday through Saturday. It was the start of its West Coast run. Miss Channing remarked that the new theater was beautiful and had only been here a few months. Gower Champion was the director/choreographer and Channing was very impressed with the cast he assembled. She is delightful as she talks to Harold Keen about her affection for San Diego. How nice it must have been to have her perform in our city after she won the Tony award for best actress in 1964. It won eleven including best musical.
On August 27, 1965, baseball great and hometown hero Ted Williams sat down with News 8’s George Lewis for an interview. The longtime Boston Red Sox player who was born and raised in San Diego talked to our reporter about his thoughts on baseball at the time, his favorite local fishing spots, and his newfound love for golf. The last few moments of the video don’t have sound but show Williams speaking to smiling teenagers and even showing off his swing.
A special report on MCRD. Reporter Mel Knoepp highlighted what it was like for a new recruit...from the drill instructor's welcome, to their boot haircut to basic training at the depot.
And we look back at the year that was--1965--in a year in review report.
