One of the biggest house moving jobs in San Diego history is slowly coming to a conclusion. This two story 120 ton house is nearing a 30 mile journey to stand on a new foundation at the southwest corner of Helix and Fuerte Drives in La Mesa. Because of city regulations, it is taking approximately 30 hours along a 30-mile circuitous route. The roof of the 30 by 50 foot building was removed to make the journey somewhat less difficult from San Juan road in Mission Hills to La Mesa. The house was purchased by George Carpenter. Its initial movement had to be on Sundays along less travelled roads. This is where it will have its new permanent foundation. Movers had to put three tarpaulins over the top of the house during yesterday’s heavy rains. It’s believed the biggest single-family dwelling ever moved in the city.
