Description
September 8, 1968
The Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park inducted six new members this past weekend. Former movie stuntman Frank Tallman was master of ceremonies for the induction rites at the El Cortez Hotel…with the help of TV 8 personality Bob Dale. Each of the honorees will be enshrined at the Hall of Fame with a portrait…and details of their aerospace exploits. Those inducted include Baron Manfred Von Richthofen…the Red Baron of World War one. West German general Walter Krupinski accepted the Richthofen award. America’s first orbiting astronaut John Glenn was installed in the Hall of Fame. The father of another astronaut, Walter M. Schirra, Senior, accepted the tribute on Glenn’s behalf. Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, rocket pioneer Theodore Von Karman, aircraft engineer Frank Fink, and Waldo Waterman—who still builds and flies his own vintage model aircraft—at age 75—were also installed.
