April 29, 1963 Every community has organizations for the welfare of men, women, and children in need. But animals can have problems too. Perhaps it’s a dog that has been abandoned. Or has a broken leg caused by a hit and run driver. Or has been abused by its owner. At the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, sick, injured, or abandoned animals, picked up off the streets or out in the countryside have a friend indeed. Many are brought in by strangers who feel compassion for the weak and helpless. Located in Encinitas, and serving San Dieguito communities, the Rancho Coastal Humane Society began two years ago as a volunteer project of individual citizens. It has been spearheaded by Mrs. Maria Lloyd and was built with funds accumulated from private donations. Now the nonprofit corporation has a 50-thousand-dollar shelter facility. It handled 3,000 animals last year. Mrs. Lloyd, of Rancho Santa Fe, says the shelter’s purpose is to protect animals from suffering and to develop the sentiment of the public toward humane treatment of animals. It’s not a pound and not a veterinary hospital. Mrs. Lloyd’s philosophy is that you can tell a lot about people by the way they treat animals.
