November 17, 1979 It was the first annual Gobble-thon in Bonita featuring some of the wildest turkeys west of the Pecos. There was a grand prix type course complete with red flags and bales of hay. It was for a good cause with proceeds going to Children’s Hospital. The turkeys were meant for the dinner table, but organizers of the event turned them into racers. Jesse Macias said they promised the next year would be bigger and better. So, we’ll have to dig up the 1980 race and see.
