Description
Sergeant Lon Nguyen and Deputy Alan Peters talked about what you should do ahead of your next road trip to keep your little ones safe.
There are many car seat choices on the market. What you're seeing here is just a basic guideline of the types of car seats.
• To find the right car seat for your child, choose one that is based on your child's age and size.
• The manufacturer's box often shows the height and weight limit for the car seat you are buying. Car seats also have expiration dates.
• Your child's safety could be in jeopardy if your car seat is not installed properly.
o Make sure your read the manual for your car seat and car.
o Car seats have multiple slots for routing the seatbelt during installation.
o A properly installed car seat or booster should not move more than an inch in any direction. It shouldn't wiggle.
o If you have a forward-facing car seat, always use a tether. The tether strap comes from the top of the car seat and has a hook on the end that will connect to the tether anchor in the vehicle.
o Make sure your harness is snug enough by doing the pinch test. If the harness is loose, you will be able to pinch the strap between your fingers. Tighten the harness and try again.
o Whether you've just installed a car seat of need help installing it, you can get help from a crime prevention specialist at Sheriff's Stations and Substations. They are trained and certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They will inspect your car seat for free and show you how to correctly install and use it.
