September 4, 1987 Distillery West in Solana Beach was an underage dance club until a city decision ordered owner Richard Vander to keep minors under 18 out. He said he had an agreement with the city to allow 16–20-year old kids inside the club if he made a good faith effort to obtain the required permits. He was cited and arrested for allowing minors in. On this day when Allison Ross was there for News 8, parents and minors came to his defense. A young lady said they were pushing everybody back out to possibly drive drunk and get in trouble. A mother said the kids need a place to go and the kids were being discriminated against. Vander angrily told reporters they took alcohol out of the club and gave teenagers a place to go.
