Description
September 5, 1987
It was Saturday, Labor Day weekend but it looked more like a weekday in September after all the tourists left. South Mission Beach should have been packed--so where was everybody? Perhaps it was because San Diego police announced that if people thronged to the beaches, they would close off the streets to traffic. Chris Saunders wondered if they weren’t at the beaches, where were they? They found them at Fashion Valley Shopping Center. The San Diego Zoo was packed with tourists and locals. The big attraction they went to see were the new arrivals, the two giant pandas. A koala with a human mouth said, “I hate pandas.” They were getting all the attention just as the koalas once had. Later, they went back to Pacific Beach and it had filled up a little, but certainly not what was expected.
