Description
Ashley Bendas along with artists and musicians talked about the weekend festivities.
This beloved annual event features more than 20 master artists from all over Latin America displaying authentic folk art, handcrafted jewelry, handwoven textiles, and more, as they provide live demonstrations of their crafts for attendees.
The event also includes the largest collection of Mata Ortiz Pottery in San Diego.
-- Mata Ortiz pottery is a centuries-old art form known for its detailed process and hand-painted geometric and ancestral symbols.
Attending artists come from all across Latin America, including Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador and Ecuador and beyond including:
-- Pedro Montaño: A Oaxacan weaver from Teotitlan del Valle showcasing marvelous wool rugs and runners in both traditional and contemporary Mexican designs and performing demonstrations on his handmade loom.
-- Lorena Chavez Rosa: A visual artist born and raised in Mexico who creates contemporary sculptures to celebrate nature including intricate flowers, insects and humans.
-- Kim Yubeta: A statement-making jeweler who creates colorful, beaded necklaces and bracelets reminiscent that combines antiques and contemporary components and different Latin American cultures.
TINKU, Folkloric dancers and strolling mariachis will be performing throughout the weekend
Mexican cuisine will be for sale during the event from neighboring Casa Guadalajara restaurant.
The festival will run August 5-7, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
