Description
July 29, 1987
Dave Cohen at the 50th season of Del Mar Racing in 1987. He talked to a man who was there on opening day in 1937. He showed off his 50-year-old memento. Leonard Dorfmann also was there on that first day—he was 15 and worked the back stretch. He was a trainer in 1987. He said he worked for a buck a day and he was thrilled to death. Another man recalled August 12, 1945 when the end of World War 2 was announced over the pa system. “The shouting was such that…I never heard before or since, anything like it at all as far as the people being jubilant.” A nostalgic day at the races 35 years ago.
