Drowning is a leading cause of death in young children according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and cases always rise during the hot summer months. At Rady Children's Hospital, they're sounding the alarm about water safety, saying there’s been a recent surge in near drownings. In June, doctors there saw a total of 17 near drownings. Last week, they saw five in just one day, with up to 20 expected in July. "Each one of those parents in those situations say it wasn't expected," said Rady Children’s emergency room nurse, Frank Sturniolo.
