North Island, Coronado Airport ’77 set
The disaster film Airport ’77 was on location in Coronado when TV 8 paid a visit. Janine Tartaglia scored interviews with two members of the all-star cast George Kennedy and Jimmy Stewart. Kennedy explained the film’s premise and Stewart said that disaster films, popular in the 1970s, were nothing new. He tried to recall the name of an old film about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. He was referring to “San Francisco,” a 1936 musical-drama disaster film directed by W. S. Van Dyke, based on the April 18, 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The film stars Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy.
Airport ’77 was expected to cost Universal Studios ten million dollars. It made a healthy profit. The film grossed $30 million in the United States and Canada and $61 million internationally for a worldwide total of $91 million.
