Tim K. Mackey from UC San Diego explained how kids are getting fentanyl and how parents can identify if your child is drug sourcing.
Dr. Tim said, “There are drug sellers on every major social media platform — that includes Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, TikTok and emerging platforms like Discord and Telegram,” said Tim Mackey, a professor at the University of California San Diego who runs a federally funded start-up that developed artificial intelligence software to detect illicit online drug sales. “It’s an entire ecosystem problem: As long as your child is on one of those platforms, they’re going to have the potential to be exposed to drug sellers.”
Last year, the San Diego regional office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported seizing 6,354 pounds of fentanyl. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates it only takes 2 milligrams of fentanyl to kill an adult. The amount of fentanyl seized last year is enough to kill 1.4 billion people, on the low end. That is over four times the population of our entire country.
