Description
September 1989
Lyceum Theatre, Downtown San Diego
Are You Lonesome Tonight was a play about Elvis Presley. It was billed as a tender yet tough look at his life, from his early days in Mississippi to his final days in failing health.
Rick Sparks portrayed young Elvis and Sam Woodhouse, the older version.
Woodhouse explained the complexities of Presley to CBS 8’s Andrea Naversen. “He was a man who had everything, yet he was very lonely. He was one of the most generous people you’ll ever encounter and also one of the most selfish.”
Woodhouse recently retired after 46 years at the helm of the San Diego Repertory Theatre. He was the cofounder and artistic director.
