This is a very special find in our CBS 8 archives. The year was 1960– and Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was here in San Diego. There aren’t many details about her visit to San Diego online— so uncovering this film and the scripts that detail what she was doing during her visit here, adds a new chapter to preserve in San Diego’s rich history. March 29, 1960 This afternoon Eleanor Roosevelt held a news conference at the home of Dr. Roger Revelle, head of the University of California at La Jolla. She told newsmen that she believes that although Adlai Stevenson is not an avowed candidate for the democratic presidential nomination, she thinks that he would make the best candidate because he is the most mature. Mrs. Roosevelt also lauded the negroes civil rights fight in the South…saying that their Gandhi-like nonviolent demonstrations should be successful. March 30, 1960 This was the scene Tuesday night at Russ Auditorium where Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt addressed an overflow audience…she was in San Diego Tuesday to help commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the chartering of the University of California. The program at the Russ opened with an academic procession of about 75 faculty and staff members. Mrs. Roosevelt was striking in the scarlet robes she wore at Oxford University when she received an honorary degree there. In her talk, the noted author, stateswoman and widow of former president Franklin D. Roosevelt, warned Americans to wake up to the fact that the world is changing, and we must change with it. She said that we have a different world now that this is a missile world. “No longer will the Russians over-run Europe with the world’s largest army,” Mrs. Roosevelt said…now they’ll strike directly at us.” She said that young people must face up to today’s problems…the Russians begin with their children…we don’t even tell our children there is a challenge.
