Description
When Texas Republican Rep. Keith Self introduced the first openly transgender lawmaker in Congress as “Mr. McBride" during a subcommittee hearing, Rep. Sarah McBride responded by referring to Self as “Madam Chair” and tried to move on to her remarks.
On Tuesday, the subcommittee’s top Democrat, Rep. William Keating, called Self “out of order,” asking, “Have you no decency?” He insisted that Self “introduce a duly elected representative the right way.”
Self adjourned the meeting instead.
Republican lawmakers have targeted McBride and refused to acknowledge trans people’s identity after U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive orders declaring only two sexes.
“No matter how I’m treated by some colleagues, nothing diminishes my awe and gratitude at getting to represent Delaware in Congress,” McBride later posted. “I simply want to serve and to try to make this world a better place.”
