Norfolk Nebraska Fire and Rescue officials arrived on scene Sunday at a fire and noticed involved structures and heavy smoke. A report was given to them by a local Emergency Manager in Stanton County that there were multiple propane tanks and that one was near the involved structure. Upon arrival, crews heard what they believed to be a pressure relief from a propane tank. Crews stopped short of the incident rather than moving up closer and shortly thereafter an explosion occurred. This explosion was a 500-gallon propane tank. Had responders moved up sooner, they said they have no doubt injuries or possibly even worse would have occurred. Following the explosion, crews were able to carefully approach the scene and ultimately extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported to civilians or responders.
