Description
The Trump administration has fired most of the board of the U.S. Institute of Peace and sent its new leader into the Washington headquarters of the independent organization.
A document obtained by The Associated Press shows that the remaining three members of the group’s board fired President and CEO George Moose on Friday.
Current USIP employees said staffers from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency entered the building despite protests that the nonprofit is not part of the executive branch.
Police cars were outside the building Monday evening.
Moose said that “DOGE has broken into our building.”
“People from DOGE are in the building now, they’re here. They had come before, we had communicated with them before, going all the way back to February the 24th, we had conversations with them in which we sought to explain our purpose, our status, as a non-executive branch agency created by Congress,” Moose said.
USIP helps prevent violent conflicts and broker peace deals abroad.
“This building, really was built, not just as a platform for the work that we do, it was built as a symbol of the aspiration of the American people to be peace builders in the world. That’s why it’s as beautiful as it is. And I have to believe that in the long term that purpose, that mission, will be reaffirmed and that we will in one way or another be allowed to continue,” Moose said.
