The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has paused plans to remove roadside memorial signs after notices were sent to some families, informing them their signs would be taken down under a new policy. Laura Vey-Ashby, whose brother William Vey was killed by a drunk driver in 1988, raised concerns about the removal of her family’s memorial sign near Tacoma. Vey-Ashby explained the pain her family endured and emphasized the importance of the sign as both a tribute to her late brother and a reminder to others about the dangers of drunk driving. “I watch the pain of my parents losing a child, and it is nothing that I want anybody else to go through plus it is a memory of my brother,” she said.
