After years of studying the idea, Rep. Jake Fey is ready for the state to use a new way to support road costs. “It's time to move forward and get started,” said Fey, (D-Tacoma). Fey, the chair of the House Transportation Committee, said the increase of fuel-efficient vehicles has created short, and long-term budget deficits for Washington transportation projects. For more than 100 years, the state has relied on a gas tax to raise funds for road maintenance and construction. Fey’s proposal, House Bill 1921, would create a road usage charge.
