Description
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) welcomed its new chief on Thursday.
KING 5 spoke with Chief Shon Barnes about his new role joining a department struggling with understaffing and a slew of interdepartmental controversies.
Barnes, 50, began his career in 2000 as a patrol officer in Greensboro, North Carolina. He then served as deputy chief of police in Salisbury from 2017 to 2020. In February 2021, he became the chief of police in Madison, Wisconsin. Barnes also served as the director of training and professional development for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability in Chicago, according to his biography on the department's website.
“I know who I am as a police leader, as a person,” he said on Thursday. “I think this will be a good fit.”
