Description
The holidays are an especially challenging time for blood donor centers across the country. The need for blood is no laughing matter, but Lynette Manning, a regional manager at Bloodworks Northwest, has discovered a side of her that audiences are really starting to embrace.
“I was kind of the jokester of the family, so family gatherings or amongst my friends, I was always the one cracking the jokes, making people laugh,” Manning said.
Her comedy career took off starting with a local mic night in 2021. Manning says she wanted to try it one day, and it ended up sticking.
“The moment I grab the mic I’m in my element,” she said. “I’m just loving it. I love the energy from the crowd, and it’s kind of addicting to get all those laughs.”
Before becoming a regional manager with Bloodworks Northwest, Manning was a recruiter. She’d go into businesses, churches and schools to get people excited about giving blood. Engaging with people in that way helped her get into comedy.
“During the day, I get to do something that saves lives in our community, and at night, I get to do something in a way of saving lives with laughing and humor. It just brings joy, both sides.”
Because the holidays are such a busy time for people, blood donation isn’t often at the top of the to-do list. It’s important for people to give, though, as the need is still present.
“Dips like holidays or summers, it does take a toll on our inventory, so it’s important for people to give, especially during these times,” Manning said.
If you are apprehensive about giving blood, Manning encourages you to think about the good you’re doing and the impact you’re having on people’s lives.
Bloodworks Northwest needs 1,000 donors a day to walk into their donor centers, from Bellingham to Eugene
