The U.S. Army’s recruiting team is passionate about sharing the Army's commitment to education and helping young people succeed, not only in school, but also in life. “Last year, we gave out $22,000 in sponsorships to 10 different local schools to support things like sports team jerseys, STEM clubs, various things that the faculty have nominated,” said Lieutenant Colonel David Sherck. “That gives our recruiters an opportunity to come in and talk about Army career opportunities with those students as part of that program.” The school signs off on deliverables that allow recruiters to present Army opportunities to students and educators in different capacities. Washington High School is one of the schools benefiting from this program. The Army gave them a check to use for uniforms and equipment. “It was a great opportunity for us to get some new gear and support the Army just as much as they’re supporting us,” said Kory Hamilton, coach of the Washington High School basketball team. U.S. Army recruiters work with students in a variety of ways throughout the Pacific Northwest. “We serve as athletic coaches, as recruiters and substitute teachers,” said Sergeant First Class Daryl Imperial. “We volunteer in high schools for anti-bullying initiatives and promote the Army values in the student body.” As students get back to school, recruiters are talking with schools and volunteering to help students. “It’s all about us exposing those high school students to career opportunities and helping out with the high schools and getting in there and encouraging good citizenship, even for those that aren’t interested in serving,” Sherck said.
