Description
Serengeti Care patient Ed Plocha fell down the stairs about two years ago and suffered a traumatic brain injury. With the help of in-home caregivers, he has been able to stay in his own house.
“We’ve been to other situations where large numbers of people are being treated or they live, and we just felt that with familiarity and trust, it’s better to be in your own home,” Plocha said.
Plocha’s Serengeti caregiver, Ellie Burton, oversees his activities, encourages exercises and helps him maintain independence and safety. She’s able to provide one-on-one personalized care.
“Being in a facility, you kind of lose your sense of self and comfortability, so being able to be in the home definitely gives them a better quality of life,” Burton said.
Plocha says there is a sense of warmth and acceptance with Burton and other caregivers he’s met.
“We build relationships,” he said. “I’ve built relationships with each of the Serengeti folks that have been here, and I respect their professional knowledge.”
After much research and conducting interviews with in-home care providers, Plocha and his wife chose Serengeti Care.
“We met and we talked, and they sounded sincere,” he said. “We gave it a try and have been very pleased with the result.”
For Burton, her favorite part of the job is building strong relationships with her clients like Plocha.
“It’s truly an honor to get to serve the people that have paved the way for me and many others like me,” she said
And Plocha enjoys time with Burton and feeling a sense of community with his caregivers and the larger Serengeti Care team.
“I really truly do believe it’s all about relationships,” he said. “Life is all about relationships.”
