Description
Mary’s Place has helped thousands of women and families move out of homelessness into more stable situations. In 2020, Amazon supported the opening of Mary's Place Family Center in the Regrade, a shelter built in one of its Seattle campus buildings.
“Before we had our Regrade shelter that we currently know today, it started off with just some hotels, some empty hotels,” said Dominque Alex, interim CEO of Mary’s Place. “We needed a home for now for folks that were sleeping outside, and Amazon said, ‘let’s do this.’”
Across five emergency family shelters in King County, Mary’s Place keeps kids, parents and even pets together and safe, providing resources, housing and employment services.
“These are our neighbors,” said Taylor Hoang, senior manager, community engagement, Amazon. “These are residents that live in our communities, moms and dads, children, and they need a safe place to go.”
Amazon provided Mary’s Place families with a special holiday experience this month. At its Winter Wonderland, families picked out gifts and participated in fun activities together.
“We recognize that not every family, not every child has the opportunity to participate in holiday festivities, whether it’s doing gingerbread houses or participating in pictures,” Hoang said.
More than 2,000 families and children across 12 nonprofits were treated to Winter Wonderland to shop the toy store and get a magical holiday experience. Six hundred Amazon employees also volunteered to help make it a memorable event for families.
During the holiday season, many people are giving back through fundraisers, coat and toy drives, donations and volunteering. For Mary’s Place, every bit of support helps.
“Anything matters, your resources, your energy,” Alex said.
