The City of Tenino took a police officer it hired last year off the streets after a February KING 5 investigation revealed the cop and his former law enforcement agency made a deal to cover up his firing for excessive force. The Tenino Police Department removed the officer, Christopher Backus, from patrol and placed him on a “modified assignment” while a Seattle law firm conducts an internal review of Tenino’s hiring process and Backus’ past employment as a Tukwila police officer, according to Tenino Mayor Wayne Fournier. “Within a very short time of us seeing the news report, action was taken,” said Fournier, who addressed the KING 5 coverage at a Feb. 28 city Tenino council meeting. “We have to get to the bottom of things. We have to look at our processes.
