More than sixty years after his parents made the journey north from Jalisco, Mexico, in pursuit of the American Dream, Oscar Gomez has made the reverse trip south in search of a better life. Feeling threatened by US President Donald Trump's fierce anti-immigration rhetoric, the 55-year-old says the Republican's election in November 2024 was the "tipping point." "Even though they're [Trump's comments] not directed at me, I take them personally because I'm Latino, especially when they make comments about immigrants, I think of my parents," says Gomez as he sits on a bench in the Mexico City, where he says he now sees his future.
