Description
Monks hold their robes to their faces as they look at a gaping hole in the ground where a dead body lay, as the odour of death permeates the air above the remains of the U Hla Thein monastery in Mandalay. 48 hours after a shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck, destroying buildings across the central Myanmar city, rescuers from Myanmar and China drill through rubble to find buried victims.
A coordinator on the site told AFP more than 180 monks were sitting an exam inside when the quake struck and collapsed a whole section of the building. On Friday and Saturday a total of 21 people were rescued alive, and 13 bodies had been recovered by Sunday morning, the rescuer said. IMAGES
