"We will need to seriously encourage a review of the way we conduct Catholic education within the Church," declares the Archbishop of Marseille, Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, newly elected as head of the French Bishops' Conference, as he discussed the Bétharram case during a press conference in Lourdes. Since last year, police have received more than 150 complaints of violence, sexual assault and rape at the Notre-Dame de Bétharram Catholic school near the southwestern town of Pau, where French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has been mayor since 2014.
