In 2003, Khodorkovsky received a prison sentence on dubious tax evasion charges, after challenging Putin early in his rule. He was granted pardon by Putin a decade later, packed on a plane and sent out of Russia. In exile, Khodorkovsky went on to attack Putin publicly and pour millions into funding Kremlin critics, but was never fully embraced by the Russian opposition.
