Sponsored by: Soul Wise Solutions | It’s a homecoming, of sorts, for Seana Smith who is returning to La Jolla to launch a new book and thank the community who supported her through her most challenging years. Born intersex, once a college athlete with a mega-watt smile and larger than life personality, Seana found herself homeless, sleeping outside the La Jolla Recreation Center. But an empathetic soul, an unexpected friendship and a caring community stepped up and changed the course of her life forever. I, SEAN/A is an extraordinary story that celebrates the power of resilience, faith, kindness, love and the strength of the human spirit.
Psychologist and co-author Dr. Kirsten Harrison and co-author Seana Smith join us to share more about how Seana defied the odds and how their beautiful friendship unfolded.
Seana was unhoused and living on the streets for eight years. Her vibrant outfits and cheerful demeanor made her a prominent face in the seaside community of La Jolla. It all started with Seana’s inherent virtue of being neighborly and doing her part through adversity.
“I noticed that Seana, regardless of weather, regardless of circumstance, was constantly positive and she was incredible the way she helped everybody, putting a little shopping cart with all the groceries for a business,” said psychologist Dr. Kirsten Harrison. “When I found out she was homeless, it blew my mind because I couldn’t believe that somebody that was so joyous walking through the day so purposefully actually had no place to stay at night. I just found it my mission, as a psychologist, to get to know a little bit more of her story.”
“I used to always come to the La Jolla Recreation Center for basketball after work. I was teaching. Things started to change. I didn’t understand. Eventually I was living in my car, fell behind with the car payments,” said Smith “My car was taken away and I was really on the street. Ending up being at the Rec Center and sleeping outside, it was truly traumatic and also thankful for all the help - clothing, housing shelter, you name it. I didn’t do without. I truly am so thankful for the community of La Jolla. They are amazing people.”
From a life of homelessness to a life of purpose, Seana walks a half marathon each day and is a published author, teacher and advocate.
